Pound Ridge Jodo

From feudal Japan to 2025 in Pound Ridge, NY comes this classical martial art that pairs a 5 foot wooden staff called a Jo against  a wooden Japanese style sword called a bokken. Starting February 3, Pound Ridge Recreation Department is offering an 8 week introductory course on Monday and Tuesday nights. Attendance both nights is encouraged but not mandatory.

Background

Pound Ridge Jodo practices a style of Jodo called Shintō Musō-ryū, (SMR) which is a  koryū or “old school”  jōdō with a rich history of facts and legends.  We also employ some training methods used by Seitei Jodo, although we do not participate in their gradings or competition.

The instructors at Pound Ridge Jodo have many years of experience in SMR as well as several other forms of martial arts, including Karate, Kung-Fu, and Tai Chi.

Who is this for?

Everyone, however kids under 16 generally don't do well.

What do I wear?

General exercise clothes that allow movement. A martial arts style gi is ideal.

What equipment do I need?

Nothing to begin with. Everything will be provided. You will eventually want your own Jo.

No one uses swords anymore, why do we practice with them?

Two reasons:

1.We are preserving a classical martial art derived 400 years ago under combat conditions.

2. All weapons, (excluding guns), have similar characteristics, they are merely an extension of the arm. They rely on the same movements as empty hand defenses.

Are the exercises strenuous?

Moderately.

Will I get a certificate or promotion?

No titles or robes here. You are what you are capable of.
